a Heavenly walking tour
Brooklyn Heights boasts an exceptional group of 19th-century Gothic Revival churches, including important works by Minard Lafever, James Renwick, and Richard Upjohn. The Municipal Art Society of New York’s winter walk, with architectural historian Matt Postal, will lead the group past at least one by each architect and conclude with a private tour of Grace Church, designed by Upjohn in 1847-48. The tour willl be welcomed by historian Marianne Hurley who will discuss the history of the congregation and the restoration of the dazzling Puginesque interiors, which feature a rare 19th-century scheme for a painted ceiling, as well as stained-glass windows by such leading firms as Tiffany Studios.
The experience starts at 11 a.m. on Sunday, January 31. Tickets, which cost $30 ($20 for Municipal Art Society members), are available online or by calling (212) 935 2075.
